Jan. 31, 2012 - Kelowna, BC
Plenty of skill and lots of flash and excitement were on display at the skills competition during the 2012 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at Prospera Place in Kelowna Tuesday night.
The CHL's Top Prospects put on a great show during the skills competition and 3 on 3 Challenge in Kelowna foreshadowing what is expected to be an intense game on Wednesday night.
Rockets defenceman Damon Severson recorded the fourth fastest time in the fastest skater event while Colton Sissons and the rest of the players in the Show-Down Breakaway contest thrilled fans with some exciting and innovative moves.
"It was awesome," said Severson, who along with Sissons, received huge ovations from a crowd of 5,500 at Prospera Place. "It was awesome to hear my home crowd cheer that loud for me. It's unreal to have this game taking place in my home rink. I'm just honoured to be a part of it."
Sissons, who tried a spin-o-rama during the breakaway event, said it was a great night.
"My expectations weren't too high going in," he said with a smile when asked about the breakaway contest. "I throught I would try a spin-o-rama and see what would happen and I almost had it. But it was fun. It was a good time."
With the completion of the skills competition at the Top Prospects Game 40 of the best major junior hockey players in the Canadian Hockey League have turned their sites to the game on Wednesday.
Hundreds of NHL scouts and general managers have gathered in Kelowna to get a look at the 2012 NHL draft class. The Top Prospects Game is seen as a chance for players to prove themself to scouts. It's what makes for an intense and hard hitting affair.
"It's definitely not a no-hitter," said CHL analyst Sam Cosentino, who acted as a judge during the breakaway contest.
